From Scottish writer William Meikle comes a novel that is a welcome return to those tomes of pure enjoyment that we read with guilt in our early teens, in the tradition of James Herbert’s THE RATS and Guy N. Smith’s NIGHT OF THE CRABS.

It begins with a dead whale on a Boston shoreline--not in itself an unusual occurrence. But the things that claw their way out of the blubber are very unusual indeed. A cast of giant crabs, evolved over centuries, descends on a small coastal town and, having feasted, make their way to the city using the sewer system. Soon they are swarming around Manhattan, hunted and harried by a SWAT team tasked with ridding the city of the menace...before the menace gets big enough to rid itself of the city.

"I don’t think you can have much more fun reading a book than “Crustaceans”. It is one hell of a ride that will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can read them. There is bloodshed galore, epic man vs. crab battles and there is even room for some heartfelt moments." - Famous Monsters of Filmland

Crustaceans eBook William Meikle Frank Walls

I have to be honest. I didn't have high hopes when I purchased Crustaceans. It's a book about giant crabs attacking people, it's not Nabokov. I was hoping for some Creature Double Feature style mindless fun with humor and horror. Mister Meikle has the mindless part down cold, it's the fun part he's forgotten.
The exuberant positive reviews for this book are another example of what's wrong with Amazon. I respect anyone's honest opinion and understand that people have different taste in every form of art and entertainment, but no one could honestly give this book a 5 star review. It's simply too poorly constructed.
This book was written over a weekend by someone hoping to get a few bucks from people gullible enough to believe a few over the top reviews. You got mine this time, but never again.

Crustaceans eBook William Meikle Frank Walls Reviews

The intro here champions the similarities to Guy Smiths "Crab" series, and it's definitely there. It could actually use a little less of that series influence, a bit more originality.
Still, it's a fast moving read, enjoyable enough. The technical quality is good- with the exception of some badly mis- and over-used italics, the spelling, grammar and punctuation are all reasonable.
My only real major quibble is the actual length of the story. I recognize the need for authors to spread word of their works, and I appreciate free previews....but man, am I getting sick of books that close out at the 60-70% point to make room for these previews! Definitely an abrupt ending.
I'd give it a 3.5 stars, but it won't let me.

On the plus side, it's fast-moving and entertaining. It'd make a great horror film. Plus the character Porter (a semi-alcoholic crab fisherman who captures one of the mutant crabs and tries to sell it) goes through a character arc as what can basically be described as a monster-crab apocalypse happens and he rises to the occasion. Although there is some back story, it's pretty low-key and doesn't slow the story down in the way back-story often does. It's a good quick read for when I'm exercising or taking the train places.

On the minus side, in the e-book edition at least there aren't section breaks between point-of-view and scene switches, which can make it difficult to read. Plus American characters are depicted using or thinking "tube" instead of "subway." And "fire in the hold" is used many times instead of "fire in the hole."
Plot/Storyline 4 Stars

This was a true action horror novel that I could easily see turned into a movie. It has an interesting, if reckless, heroine, a macho man to save the world and the heroine, and a feckless beach bum to turn into a hero. All of these get to help save the world from giant killer crabs.

There was plenty of blood and gore as the crabs were able to snap not only limbs, but entire bodies in half with their claws. Needless to say, there were body parts scattered throughout the novel. Not only that, the crabs also displayed some intelligence, which made them even more formidable.

One problem I had with the story was that it was never explained how the crabs came to be, where they came from. I couldn't even just believe that they had suddenly evolved, since Shona's, the heroine's, father had studied them previously. So, the reader is expected to believe that they have been around for a long time, but not spotted by many people. I guess it could happen, but I wanted a more plausible explanation.

My other issue was with the ending. Many great horror stories leave room for a sequel. However, this one just left too many of the crabs alive and kicking. The ending was sudden and incomplete.

Character Development 4 3/4 Stars

For a novel of this type, the characters were very well developed. I especially enjoyed the portions from the point of view of Joe Porter, a crab fisherman. He grew from an unlikeable bum to someone who actually wanted to help. This development was done in a very believable style over time, rather than a sudden epiphany.

Shona was also pretty well developed. Although, I did feel more information could have been given about her past and present circumstances to flesh out her character.

Writing Style 5 Stars

The sentence structuring and paragraph flow were both smooth and easy, befitting a novel of this type. The author did a terrific job on the action sequences. There was no confusion and the suspense was built naturally, not forced. The dialogue was done well enough that I could hear the characters talking out loud.

The descriptions were excellent. I could almost create the movie sets myself.

Editing/Formatting 4 3/4 Stars

There were a few editing errors sprinkled throughout.

I also didn't like it that the book ended somewhere at around 80% on my . Because of this, the ending was even more of a let down as I was expecting another 20% of book. Instead, there is either a novella, short story, or excerpt tacked on at the end. I'm not certain which as I didn't read it.

Rating R for Extreme Blood and Gore
